Voter Owned Hawai'i: The Reform That Makes All Other Reforms Possible

Welcome Students

THE PROBLEM

STUDENTS ARE BEING TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF. Private companies like Sallie Mae -- which provides federal and private student loans and is listed on both the Fortune 500 and the Forbes 500 list of Americas biggest corporations -- lobby for higher interest rates for student loans, and work to limit the amount of federal money available to students in an effort to increase their current profit margin.

Credit card companies set up tables on campuses across the nation and lure students into high-risk, high-rate credit card scams that end up trapping students into years of debt.

Some of the largest food providers like Sedexho Marriott lobby for sweetheart deals to expand their operations on campuses across the country. They regularly buy their food from other international conglomerates, buy genetically altered foods, and pay low wages to their employees.

All of these situations -- and a great many more -- show the extraordinary influence that big money donors have on election campaigns and the effect this money has on the policies enacted.

THE SOLUTION

WE HAVE A SOLUTION. Across the country a new brand of politics is taking hold. It's called Voter Owned Elections, or Clean Elections. This program provides candidates who reject taking special interest money enough money to run successful campaigns. Freed from the constraints of being dependent on corporate money, VOE office-holders can do what is best for average citizens, not the desires of well-heeled donors.

The Voter Owned Elections program works remarkable well. In Maine, 79% of the state Legislature run their campaign with no corporate money and influence!

We can bring VOE to Hawai`i if enough people join together.

WHAT YOU CAN DO

1. Become a Voter Owned Elections Intern - earn course credit and experience an authentic grassroots campaign first hand. Organize constituents, work with the media, produce Olelo programs and work with us to pass this important legislation.

2. Host a Talk Story House Party on behalf of Voter Owned Elections - Call our office and work with our Field Team to host a Talk Story gathering. Invite friends and professors over and have the VOE Field Team speak at your party about this amazing program.

3. Volunteer - Work with our student team to generate interest and support among other students, write letters to editors, help collect petitions, and the like. And have fun! doing these things with other students who want to change where this country is heading.

”Public financing is the difference between being able to go out and spend your time talking with voters, meeting with groups, . . . traveling to communities that have been under-represented in the past, as opposed to being on the phone selling tickets to a $250 a plate fundraiser.” --Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano, elected under Arizona's Voter Owned Elections program
